Highlights of a well-navigated exploratory bushwhack to two remote ponds-
Temperature near zero, with a frigid wind chill.
Cloud cover yielding to blue sky and dazzling sunshine.
Six to eight inches of fresh powder on a solid base to snowshoe on.
Splendid backcountry scenery that few hikers witness.
Moose track, skat and beds.
Jim’s leg breaking through creek ice into the water.
Jim quickly extracting his leg, preventing a wet foot.
Dave’s snowshoe binding breaks four miles into the trek.
A hob-cobble repair to the binding.
Climbed a challenging ridgeline for a view to Woodhull Mt.
Cut the trip short because of binding.
Hiked eight miles in 6.5 hours.
A member whines because we were out of the woods with several hours of daylight still remaining.
Last, but certainly not least, great comradery among Jim, David, Greg, and Paul.

There was a great turnout for this hike on a beautiful, snowy winter day. Thirty of us traversed the trails of lovely Camden Forest Park. The main trail was nearly table-top smooth, making for fast skiing. Besides skiers, a few folks snow-shoed, while the majority just wore crampons.
The great thing about this particular park is that it has many trails that intersect with and always lead back to the main one, so it’s virtually impossible to get lost. That made it easy for folks to go their own way, adjusting their routes according to their own interests. It was fun day!

With the temperatures reading -17 degrees, four tramps headed to the Catskill mountains.
We were all hoping that when we got to our destination the temps would warm up
but that was not the case.  We started our hike up Windham mountain with the
sun fully shining, no wind and the temperatures not budging.
The views were stunning and the skies were crystal clear, you could see for miles.
We made arrangements to stay in the area and hike Slide mountain the next day, where Diana Henry finished her quest to become a winter 35er.

Twelve of us braved the cold for a snowshoe up Moose River Mountain. We were all pretty bundled up expecting to be cold but it didn’t take long before we warmed up.

It was a beautiful  sunny blue sky day with temperatures that reached 20 degrees.

Six of us turned around and completed about 4 and 1/2 miles and six continued to the top and completed 6 miles.

As usual we stoped at our favorite watering hole (Kratzys)

Whenever and wearever tramps get together, you can count on lots of fun.

6 of us hiked 9.4 miles to East Pond on an incredibly sunny day with a cobalt sky.  Arriving at the trail parking lot the temp indicated -11, warming up to balmy 12 degrees on the way out.

There were a couple water obstacles that needed to be carefully navigated, ensuring no one would get wet.  Along the way we stopped at Little Simon Pond, admiring the beaver’s labor.  Several beaver lodges dotted the pond.  Once at East Pond, Paul and Jeremy attempted to find a lean-to that was indicated on a map that was once close to the lake.  No luck, but suggesting a hike to the Blackfoot Pond for another day.

To bring in the New Year, over 20 intrepid Tramps met at Valley View Golf Course on this very dark, moonless, foggy, cold but wet January night.
Always looking for a fun winter adventure, this hike reflected the Tramp’s love of night hikes.

With headlights on, we hiked the switchbacks, looking like a swarm of fireflies from below. Returning to the the decorated park pavilion, we found a roaring campfire, cookies and hot cocoa with optional Schnapps.  It was a great way to welcome 2022 and as always, to enjoy the company of other Tramps.
