Erie Canal – Then and Now

Erie Canal – Then and Now

As we celebrate the Bicentennial of the Erie Canal this year, let’s ponder the difference in the way it was used when the club originated. Construction began on July 4, 1817 in Rome NY and was completed October 26, 1825. The canal served as a chief traffic artery for passengers as well as freight. It might even have provided jobs to some.
The old Erie Canal was abandoned in the late 1920’s, filled in, paved and named Oriskany St. It was moved to its current location and made deeper and wider to accommodate the larger boats of the era. The canal was enlarged and straightened many times over the years. Today it is used mainly for recreation like biking, hiking, and paddling. The Tramp and Trail Club helps maintain the path along the canal. We have adopted the section from River St., Oriskany to Mohawk St., Whitesboro.
