7410 Annual Corn Roast
September 17, 2023

Write-up: Jim Wasielewski
Corn Roast Coordinators, Cooks and Helpers: Karen Oeink, Gail Hannahs, Dick Blanchard
Hike Leader: Russ Myers
Hike Co-Leader: Meg Higgerson

Today’s Corn Roast was well attended as the photos attest. Hiking stimulates the appetite and the Tramps like  food, to stay well nourished of course. Thanks to Gail, Dick (where the hell have you been) Blanchard and the sisters Karen and Janis for creating another feast for a king. Russ and Meg provided the calorie run-off hike for those who could still manage to waddle.

The following reasons why old folks like hiking were plagiarized from the prestigious journal “Senility Today”

They’re Running From Bingo Night: Who needs the thrill of daubing numbers when you can chase after squirrels on a rocky trail?

Complaining About Joints is a Sport: Hiking gives them an excellent opportunity to loudly discuss every single ache and pain in their body while they pretend to enjoy nature.

Wilderness Fashion Show: Hiking allows them to flaunt their latest hiking boots, Gore-Tex jackets, and high-tech hiking poles in the ultimate wilderness fashion show.

Gotta Get Those Facebook Likes: How else can they impress their followers with photos of themselves with trees? #NatureLover

Wildlife Documentaries: Because nothing says retirement like stalking chipmunks and squirrels for that perfect photo.

Proving Grandkids Wrong: It’s the only way to prove they’re not as frail as their grandchildren think they are.

Avoiding Yard Work: Hiking provides a guilt-free escape from mowing lawns and trimming hedges.

Medieval Torture: Hiking is basically medieval torture in the great outdoors. Who needs comfy chairs and Netflix when you can have  Adirondack; rocks and mosquitos?

Competing with GPS: Because arguing withAlexa about the right trail is the closest thing to a heated debate they’ve had in years.

Youthful Energy: Old folks hike to relive their youth. Because nothing says “I’m not getting any younger” like struggling up a mountain.

Social Security Checkpoints: Old people need to stay sharp, and what better way than navigating treacherous terrain and dodging bear attacks?

Walking Aids Auditions: Hiking is just an elaborate audition for the next generation of walkers, canes, and mobility scooters.

Collecting Walking Stick Souvenirs: The real purpose of hiking is to collect walking sticks, which they proudly display in their living rooms as proof of their daring adventures.

Impressing Grandchildren: They hike to earn bragging rights with their grandchildren, who are always far too impressed by Nana’s ability to conquer a hill.
