7330 840 Trail
January 29, 2023

Write-up: Lu Blanchard Leader: Lu Blanchard Co-Leader: Peter Franz As usual, Central NY weather changed forecasts from cloudy to rain overnight. It started sprinkling as we gathered in Best Buy’s parking lot and continued until we were about half-way through the hike! But the weather was “warm” and the wind was almost non-existent so 19 Tramps and 2 prospective Tramps set out on our adventure. Since the leader forgot the official sign-in, everyone was given an alternate version – “You…

January 28, 2023

Write-up: Bobbie Scarpino Leader: Bobbie Scarpino Co-Leader: Nancy Agen Six on snowshoes and three on skis trekked into the Tug Hill State Forest. By breaking trail we made our way to “Times Square” and on to the ridge along the Inman Gulf. We found a nice lunch spot complete with a picnic table, grill (we forgot the hot dogs), and swing. Lots of fluffy snow covered the trees and the trails making it a winter wonderland. A few tricky hills presented…

7325 Sherrill Brook Park
January 15, 2023

Write-up: Walt PillarLeader: Walt PillarCo-Leader: Bobbie Scarpino 36 Tramps, with winter cabin fever and anxious to get outside, hiked the back trails of Sherrill Brook Town Park to Rock City and the falls on a cold (17 degrees F.) clear day. The trail was good with no snow and the falls had a pretty ice coating. Several hikers exited at the 3 and 4 mile-points. About 20 finished the entire 5 miles.

Write-up: Greg Sipp Leader: Greg Sipp Co-Leader: Paul Sirtoli Without a co-leader, whose whereabouts are still a mystery, Paul subbed in at the last minute to save the hike.  Sir Tom should be stripped of his self-imposed noble title like Harry.  Seven came out on the 8-mile round trip to Chub Pond, which was a fairly easy, level trail.  With minimal snow, snowshoes were not needed nor were micro- spikes.  Mud boots would have worked with some of the trail,…

7316 Deerfield Wilderness Park
December 11, 2022

Write-up: Meg Higgerson Leader: Meg Higgerson Co-Leader: Bobbie Scarpino Our original group of 14 shrank 50% due to illness, injury or other obligations.   Gusty snow and slushy, icy roads made us rethink our original destination of Remsen Falls. Per Jim Waz  “After slipping and sliding to arrive at the meeting place, we unanimously agreed to change the hike to the Deerfield Wilderness Park. Though the weather left much to be desired, we enjoyed a virtual fire, hot dogs and brandy…

7314 Barge Canal – Utica Marsh
December 10, 2022

Write Up: Nancy Agen Leader: Nancy Agen Co-leader: Margaret Decker 27 Tramps started out on a chilly but sunny day to walk down the canal starting in North Utica with plans to circle the marsh and return by way of the trail that leads back to the observation tower. After crossing the railroad tracks, we started down Barnes Ave. and we suddenly started to hear loud gunshots nearby on the right side of the road.  Obviously, all were alarmed and…

Leader – Paul Sirtoli Co-leader: Greg Sipp Write up –  Paul Sirtoli Photo Credit – Greg Sipp     Leave it to the hearty tramps to flex out and go with the new flow for a hike.  By popular consent, and with “middle aged” enthusiastic vigor, our group of twelve thought it was a great idea to visit Bear Lake following our successful bushwhack to both the 1,965-foot Neejer Hill summit, as well as the steep escarpment on…

7312 Moe Pond
December 3, 2022

Write-up: Walt Pillar Leader: Walt Pillar Co-Leader: Madonna Fellows Fourteen Tramps hiked 6 miles around and to Moe Pond, a SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station property outside of Cooperstown. In addition to the pond, the hike included a hazy view of Otsego Lake and a beaver pond. The day was cool and cloudy but the rain held off and the trail was good.  Biological Station students and staff constantly monitor the pond and its watershed as part of the Graduate…

7311 Foxy Brown Trail
November 27, 2022

Write-up: Meg Higgerson Leader: Meg Higgerson Co-Leader: Ann Damiano Eight of us traveled to the trail head which starts at the Piseco Airport. With 2+ inches of hard-packed snow on the ground and the temperature in the high thirties, steady rain was predicted after 2 pm.  We took off at a trot hoping to complete the hike prior to getting soaked.  The Foxy Brown trail recently had a major rehab thanks to the Piseco Lake Association and the DEC. Last…
